March 2020- On the Farm Report

Kuznetsov & Knob Creek

As we enter March, breeding and foaling season are both now in full swing!  Wasabi’s first stallion, Force the Pass, has covered his first handful of mares at Anchor & Hope Farm, including Wasabi broodmares Magical Point, Ride the Tide, and Shall Try. His first mates will be checked in the coming weeks for pregnancy, and we’ll be excited to announce when those first mares are confirmed in foal.

Not every Wasabi mare will visit Force the Pass this spring, and our newest retiree from the racetrack, Justgimmeakiss, was actually our first mare of the year to be covered when she visited Pennsylvania stalwart, Weigelia, on February 20th — we’ll find out whether she’s pregnant early this month.

The Wasabi broodmare band has also been busy in the foaling barn.  Kuznetsov jumped the line and — even though she wasn’t due until March 1st — delivered our first foal of the year on February 9th at WynOaks Farm in Pennsylvania, a leggy filly (nicknamed Knob Creek) by Weigelia.  Despite her early arrival, the filly is big and healthy, and she and Kuznetsov will ship to Kentucky shortly so that the mare can visit Grade 1 winner Jimmy Creed at Spendthrift Farm.

Next to foal was first-time mom Hurryupandcomeback, who delivered a lovely colt (nicknamed Hancock) from the first crop of unbeaten Grade 1 winner Army Mule on February 11th at Murmur Farm in Maryland, while Waveland produced a monster filly (nicknamed Willett) from the last crop of Jump Start (a full-sister to Wasabi’s recently-named 2YO Wave Jumper) on February 12th at Northview PA.  Both pairs have since moved to join the majority of our mares at St. Omer’s Farm in Maryland, and both Hurryupandcomeback and Waveland will visit Force the Pass in early March.

Up next are three mares slated to foal in the first week or so of March:  Animalistic is carrying a Weigelia foal at WynOaks Farm in Pennsylvania, while Super Mama (Mizzen Mast) and Wild For Love (Great Notion) are both scheduled to produce Maryland-breds at GreenMount Farm.

A week or so later, Rockport Dancer (Macho Uno), Campaign Vows (Blofeld) and Miss Charlotte (Include) will all deliver their own Maryland-bred foals at Murmur Farm.  Tiz Emily and Jill (Irish War Cry) and Yes My Love (Holy Boss) are also due to foal at Murmur before the end of March.
